The Community Service Fund is how we bring that commitment to life for people and families in Cambridge and Greater Boston. By funding projects and volunteer opportunities spearheaded by MIT staff, students, and faculty, we ensure that the innovation and excellence which defines the Institute makes an impact at the community level.

The Community Service Fund exemplifies MIT’s commitment to serving as a thoughtful, respectful, and creative partner. The MIT Community Service Fund was established in 1968 to support MIT student-, faculty-, and staff-led service initiatives; strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between the Institute and the community; and sustain activities that promote equality of opportunity within the community.

The Community Service Fund focuses on initiatives designed and led by MIT students, staff, and faculty. Your contribution empowers our community to bring its energy and talents to serving others in and around Cambridge and Greater Boston. In the process, it equips everyone with the skills, experiences, and perspectives they need to become principled, effective 21st century leaders.

Our giving model maximizes the impact of each gift. Every penny of your contribution to the Community Service Fund goes directly to public service initiatives and nonprofit partners. Grants are distributed by a volunteer board of student, faculty, and staff trustees whose oversight ensures that every gift makes a difference.
While many giving platforms focus on seasonal or one-time gifts, the Community Service Fund is structured to provide ongoing resources for nonprofit organizations and public service initiatives that support our neighbors. Our model gives exceptional organizations the consistent support and resources they need to do the greatest possible good today, and make plans to do even better tomorrow.
